Join visiting artist Julie Adams of Julie’s Fiber Treasures in Louisville, Kentucky for this fun and colorful project! Students will dye two 8″ x 54″ silk scarves with vibrant colors then lay out a design using gathered leaves. The scarves are then rolled into bundles and steamed to set in beautiful patterns from nature. We love the layering of traditional dye techniques with eco-dyeing! You’ll learn all you need to know to make your own future beauties.
Students should gather 50-60 leaves to use on their scarves. Leaves that print well include maple, oak, dogwood, eucalyptus and blackberry or raspberry leaves. Leaves should be stored as flat as possible in zip bags in the freezer until the day of class. Please wear clothes and shoes you don’t mind getting messy as dyes, iron sulfate, aluminum sulfate, and vinegar are utilized in this process. The steaming process takes approximately 2 hours, so there will be time for a generous lunch break to explore SoMa!
Age 12+, please.
